The exhibit at Milan’s Palazzo Reale reconstructs Vienna’s cultural atmosphere at the beginning of the 20th century around the figure of Schiele, starting with the Vienna Secession, through the expressionist trends of the following generation until 1918, the year that marked the end of World War I and death of both Klimt and Schiele. The objective is to offer the public the wealth of a unique era and of its emblem city: Vienna, which in those years represented the troubled destiny of the “Old Continent”. The exhibit presents approximately 40 paintings and sketches of the artist Egon Schiele, accompanied by other masterpieces by Klimt, Kokoschka, Gerstl, Moser and various other protagonists of early 20th century Viennese culture.
Besides the beauty of the works on exhibit, the collaboration with Vienna’s Leopold Museum makes this exhibit a truly outstanding event. The Museum has a collection of masterpieces (part of which is put at the disposal of the Italian public thanks to this exhibit at Milan’s Palazzo Reale) and is the repository of a crucial moment in history that left a profound mark upon all of 20th century European culture.

The famous Genoa Boat Show was founded during the first edition that took place in Milan back in 1960 and was moved to Genoa the following year.
This initiative is the result of the partnership between Navigli Lombardi S.c.a.r.l. and Yacht and Sail – Rizzoli Publishing Italia (RCS MediaGroup), with the sponsorship and contribution of the City of Milan’s Department of Productive Activities. Milan, the Italian city that counts the highest number of boating fans, is once again hosting a great sector-related event after 50 years and the first one dedicated to watercrafts and boats up to 12 metres in length: a floating show that will offer its guests the opportunity to climb aboard and test boats along the Naviglio.
The show will also dedicate plenty of space to shipbuilding. The public will find areas dedicated to accessories and equipment, sailing schools, charter companies for renting boats and temporary shops hosting companies selling nautical apparel. In order to provide incentives for the use and purchase of boats, a boating license course will be organized during the show with the objective of offering young university students 100 licenses at a convenient price. This exhibit celebrates the multifaceted figure of Gillo Dorfles (born 1910 in Trieste, Italy) and his relationship with the city of Milan, placing emphasis on his identity as artist as well as art critic and aesthetologist with a university degree in Medicine and Psychiatry. Two hundred works on display featuring paintings, drawings, sculptures, graphic art, photographs, ceramics and jewels dating back to his early works from the 1930’s up to his recent and very original compositions imbued with subtle irony.
Ever since his early years (his first works date back to the 1930’s), Dorfles has been passionately dedicated to painting, following a surreal, metaphysical style. These are fantastic compositions painted in egg tempera, a technique used by 15th-century masters and adopted in recent times by few, refined painters.
In 1948 he founded the MAC Concrete Art Movement with Munari, Soldati and Monnet, an avant-garde movement that reacted controversially to the dogmas of Figuration as well as to Post-Cubist Abstraction.
Gillo Dorfles was one of the founders of the MAC Concrete Art Movement. Along with works from the artist’s personal collection and those from private Italian collections, others will be presented on loan from Italian museums including Parma’s CSAC: the city’s Communication Study Centre and Archives. The exhibit also features a photography section that presents portraits of the artist with intellectual and artist friends; a documentary section with Dorfles’ best known written works and a video of his interviews edited by critics and artists.
