The Museum of Milan’s Duomo was inaugurated in 1953, but the idea of its realization had already been born in the next to last decade of the eight hundred, not to disperse and to valorize the whole material in work on the Duomo, about its history and construction, as well as from desire to have had a proper Museum as other great cathedrals.
With his twenty rooms, the Duomo’s Museum, retrace the history of this extraordinary and beautiful cathedral in Milan: the phases of his construction, the projects, the sculptures, the glass door and sacred furniture.
In the 1948 nine rooms were granted to the ground floor in the most ancient wing of the Royal Palace, but in 1953 finally the suitable center to lodge and expose the works to safeguard, whose quantity was notably increased after the damages by the bombardments of the second war conflict.
The Museum included around two hundred pieces, among which works of statuary, tapestries, embossment, sketches in terracotta, graphic material, paintings, wooden models, glass door, and a section devoted to the documents of the Historical and Musical archives, accessible only to the researchers.
For the degrade of a lot of arts works caused by atmospheric pollution and for availability of other material, in years from 1974 to 1977 the Museum was enlarged with the addition of other ten rooms, some of which of great architectural prestige, completely remaked and rigorously rearranged according to a historical and chronological project.
