This large opera house in Milan was built in 1776 by Giuseppe Piermarini on the central site of Santa Maria della Scala, an old church that was built in 1381. In 1943 it was badly bombed and rebuilt three years later. Highlights include the Museo del Teatro (theatre museum) which was founded in 1913 and is home to a fine collection of sculpture, paintings and ceramics, and also La Scala’s Ballet School which was founded in 1813 and has produced many famous students. The traditional opening night of the opera season takes place on the 7th December, on the feast day of Sant’Ambrogio, the patron saint of Milan.
La Scala is among the most-celebrated opera houses in the world.
The theater seats 2,800 and attracts one of the most demanding audiences in Italy.
If you are in Milan out of season you can still visit the Museo Teatrale alla Scala in the same building from where you can view the inside of the opera theater. The museum honors the greats who performed and whose works were performed at La Scala including Verdi, Rossini and the great conductorArturo Toscanini.
